Not hating just wondering..
Today I received a non-referral but this time it was blunt and to the point and the first time I have ever seen one written like this. Is this normal ?

 excerpt:

"Your application will not be considered at the present time due to the availability of 10-point preference eligibles with a service-connected disability of 10 percent or more.  Compensably disabled preference eligibles, regardless of numerical rating, are considered ahead of all other candidates.  Based on the number of vacancies to be filled, it is unlikely that other candidates will be considered."

I don't know if it is considered normal, but I can empathize.  I have applied for a couple of different vacancies at the DOL and received that exact NOR.  After the 3rd or 4th one, I stopped applying to that particular job series at that agency.

(Disclaimer: I am a vet and used vet points to get my current job)

Sadly the non vets are being squeezed some but it is the law. Vet's preference is being pushed now more then ever since we are making hundreds, if not thousands of new vets, some damaged, every day.

We advertised 10 jobs a while back. we took the top 100 names and every one of them was a 10 point vet. None of the 5 point vets or nonvets were even referred to us for consideration.

I know it is hard to rise over that crowd but you have to find the path that will get your resume seen by the right folk. I don't know what that is though.

The hiring push is to increase the number of severely disabled vets in the Federal Government.  The overall percentage is VERY low so the priority/spot light is on them right now.

I am curious as to what the job was.

I would also like to see some statistics on what jobs are most favored by vets.  It won't change my behavior (I am a not a vet) but it would help me gauge my prospects.

It was your basic office automation information inputer type job. GS-5/6 was the range. The kind of job almost anyone can get qualifed for if they have any computer skills and a degree. The best thing is to get out of the pack and find jobs you qualify for that needs special experience .... that you have.

I wish they practiced that on the base where i've been applying at for the last four years. I have 10pt pref (80% rating) and i've applied for a buttload of jobs and haven't got so much as a interview.

Looks like a typical NOR to me.  At least you know why you're not being considered.  I've gotten NORs that simply said "Someone else was selected for the job that you applied for above."  Gee . . . was I that bad?  Or was the other guy that good?  I must have been good enough to get refered.  Hmmm . . . .

Like Knight said separate yourself from the pack and find a job that needs more than basic skills that anyone could possess.
