The American Federation of Government Employees Council of Prison Locals last week issued a loud critique of a Bureau of Prisons plan to eliminate inmate jobs at nine agency facilities—jobs the union insists furnish inmates with needed skills and pay, and provide staff with an occupied—and far less dangerous—prison population.

There is absolutely no reason why Unicor should be losing money. They should theoretically be able to do a lot of things cheaper because their labor costs are extremely low. However the government makes Unicor have to compete for government contracts against private companies and make fair bids. That obviously doesn't make sense at all. Unicor could literally provide a ton of different products and services for government use at rock bottom prices, saving the fed millions of dollars, but I guess government isn't about saving money.
