Federal telework advocates and suburban commuters had reason to rejoice last week, as the House of Representatives finally approved the Telework Improvements Act—a bill that should greatly expand telework among federal employees.

“Passage of this legislation is a terrific step forward for employees, their agencies and the public,” National Treasury Employees Union President Colleen M. Kelley said. “Increasing federal telework saves gas, reduces road congestion and improves work-life balance.”

The Senate approved a similar bill in May, when telework advocates also won a large majority of votes in the House—268 for, 147 against—but nevertheless failed under a special rules vote requiring a two-thirds majority to pass.
