I am currently pursuing my PhD in Organization and Management. I have a Masters in Management. From what I am reading on this board, most suggest that a degree in MBA or MPA is preferrable over a PhD? Any hiring officials or Senior executive response?

It really doesn't matter. I've seen senior managers with impeccable management degrees that couldn't manage themselves out of a paper bag. You either can manager or you can't. In the government, an advanced degree is a square filler and resume fodder. Experience trumps education any day. |

Who you know trumps experience and education. Network, suck up, play the game. Oh, yes, ask for a mentor who is going where you want to go, or is already there. Dress the part, act the part, take every opportunity to go to training where you will meet others you can "network" with, work on a masters or PhD where you can take on special projects at work for your assignments, I did this for two years, and take opportunities where you can make presentations of your findings and how great you have improved things...blah, blah...make your boss look good.

I made it to the interview stage for 3 SES positions, ultimately I was not selected for any of them, but every single person who made it to the interview phase had at least 1 graduate degree, several had two (I have two). One person had a PhD for one of the positions (and was also not selected). for my current position, I have never seen so many MBA's in one place. People joke that an MBA is like High School around here. Just some anecdotal onservations.

What series were these SES positions? What major was the preferred among the selecting official? Thanks.
