I feel as though I have been thrown into a new position even though I havent started yet!
I was offered a Fed Internship in finance.  I accepted and signed and sent back the acceptance letter.  I am still filling out the paperwork for the clearance and I get a phone call from someone from another dept telling me that I had been moved.  I was a little taken back because I was looking forward to the travel involved with the training and even doubled up on classes so that I would be finished with my MBA before I started training for this position.  I am a little taken back because what I was offered is not what I will be training for.  It is also not what I accepted.  Is this something that is normally done and is just part of the internship?  I dont want to ask too many questions or rock any boats with my clearance not being back yet.  I appreciate any feedback.

Do you have a hard copy of an offer letter stating your field and function or is everything going off of verbal agreements? Also, it could depend on the type of internship that you are going to be involved in. Many of the internships are rotational programs where you will be in and out of many roles over the course of the internship. Either way, possibly explain your situation and see what comes of it.

Yes, I have a hard copy of the offer and the acceptance letter that I signed and faxed back to HR.  Upon learning of what my new job would be, I called the lady from HR with whom I had been in contact with and she made a couple of phone calls to find out what was going on.  She had not known about these changes either.

She said that the reply that she had gotten was that when I came on board, there was NO WAY I was going to be in the position that was offered to me.  I thought that to be quite rude and made me think that maybe there was more to this than I know about.  The lady from HR was also told that they hired too many people for the financial services positions.

I was given the impression that my internship was "on the job training" for two years and then when I was finished with my training, I would be paid at the higher GS11 level.

I havent finished filling out my background check paperwork, so unless they have pulled some kind of preliminary credit report, I dont see how my credit rating could have played a part in this change.

My spidy senses tingle when I see this kind of comment, "so unless they have pulled some kind of preliminary credit report, I dont see how my credit rating could have played a part in this change."

Is there something there that will disqualify you...don't answer that. As an Intern you will be bumped around where needed and yes you will end up as a GS-11 if that is what the offer is. Oh but remember, you will be on probation for the two years. If you don't fit they will let you go. Can you stay good for two years?

Probation sucks in some ways.

These are my thoughts, yours may vary, unless you drink the same koolaid I do.

Well yeah, my credit is really bad and I have contemplated turning down the offer in an effort to clean it up a bit.  I dont want to totally disqualify myself from other federal employment.  I havent filled out the electronic paperwork yet, so I am not sure what is going on.

OR, "they hired too many people for the financial services positions" and they offered you a position that was already filled. HR was saying that there was NO WAY you were going to be in that position, because it wasn't available when you were hired. So instead of just withdrawing their offer they located a different position that was available, especially since it seems to be the same pay and location.
