Leave it to our mngmnt to not stand behind me! I have a rec bldg with a curbside mailbox. A retired city carrier wants to adjust the existing post and attach basically a residential city mailbox to it. It is obviously (i guess only to me) a city box, with a slot 1&1/2x7 inches or so and a locking part at the bottom. My contention is that to service this is a 2 handed motion. Sitting forward in my LLV, I must twist to face the box, open the slot with one hand and drop the mail in with my other. My brainiak Sup tells my to open the slot with the letters (some days only 1, maybe 2), then I wouldn't need to turn my body and can use 1 hand!!! In my 30 years as a rural carrier, this takes the cake!!
Of course all his connections, (he came from a city office and knows NOTHING about rurals) say they can't stop them from erecting this, as it's postmaster approved --yes you dummies for city delivery application!!!
Anyone know IN WRITING where I can find that this wouldn't conform for rural delivery? I guess if I can't stop this, I'll request a dis-mount, but, I don't want these boxes popping up all over town; you know, monkey see, monkey do...

Have you no high-rise apartments to deliver to or any cluster boxes?  Rural carriers in some cities have this type of delivery territory and the main difference from "city" carrier delivery is because they are not wearing the blue uniform.  You appear to be very lucky with driving LLV instead of your own vehicle and with all mounted deliveries on your route.  Do not transfer to any rural routes in L.A.  :)

I believe a dismount is given for each of these.

I will see if I can find anything in writing that governs this type of thing.

I do not believe you can refuse to deliver to the box if it is a USPS approved receptacle. This being said, there is a provision for this type of non-standard box in the count/evaluation process.  The time given for a non-standard box is slightly more than a regular L or non-L box.

As long as it conforms to form 4056 and is an approved box not much can be done. Just remember to place the gear selector in nuetral on a flat surface and park on a slope and then two hands is not a problem. Remember, drive when you drive and deliver when you deliver but not both at the same time.

I have always wondered, how do you know it's really an approved box. Any manufacturer could just add "APPROVED..." to their product. Wonder it there is anyplace to check on this .... doubt it Dead

Are you really complaining about having to twist your body in your LLV? I work harder turning my steering wheel LOL
