I just got a request from my Investigator of my DOD e-QIP (SF86) that I filed 2 days ago, to clarify my comments in the financial section (#26).
I said "no" to everything, but 2 items need commenting on. a) there was a $30 collections activity on one of the 3 credit reporting agencies from 2004. I've never heard of this, and it's only one agency. My selecting "no" was suggested by the DOD help desk guy who said "wait till they look into it", but he also said mention it in the comments. But this item didn't cause the request to clarify. That was a state tax form that wasn't filed via TurboTax, despite my order for them to file it. And there should have been some money taken out by the state, something less than $5K. My checking account had enough in it when it was filed, so the transaction should have gone though. But it can't be found. So I'll assume I owe it. What do I do to "clarify" this for the examiner? Say "no" to 180 days and include the tax form I have sent to the State? Or b) Set up a short term loan with the state to help pay this, then refile (but what to put in the form?) All other areas of my 68 page monster forms are unremarkable, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot and "admit" to something that I may not have done. Thanks, Ambidexter |

Long story short, I redid the e-QIP, noted the newly-found tax bill they say I owe as a "ever failed to file taxes" line in question 26, and not an 180 days late. This is what the DOD Help Desk person said to do. I added an explanation of how I don't believe I owe it, but faxed the forms to my State, and paid 20% of what may be owed.
If I don't owe, if I can find that I did pay and they lost it, then I'd apply this money to this year's tax.
The interim secret came in within 24 hours elapsed, more like 6 business hours. I suspect this is because the other stuff that needed to be done and checked were OK, they just needed clarification on the form.
In a funny side note, the State says it take over 3 months to take an old return and generate a bill to send me. The amount that would have been owed was estimated by their rep on the phone.
Cheers
